It features multiple outdoor stages with emerging local musicians and dance groups, more than 500 artisan and market vendors, food trucks, and extended patios. A parade opens the day at 10 a.m. and things run to 6 PM. It is widely treated as the unofficial opening of Calgary’s summer festival season.

It started in 1989 as a small neighbourhood celebration by the Cliff Bungalow-Mission Community Association and the 4th Street Business Revitalization Zone, and it was voted Calgary’s best free festival in 2006. It was not held in 2020 or 2021 because of the pandemic and resumed in 2022. It is run by the 4th Street Festival Society.
