Commuter Challenge Week is a friendly competition where workplaces log their commutes by walking, cycling, transit, carpooling, or working from home. It runs the first full week of June each year, and Calgary has been taking part since the beginning.
About
Commuter Challenge Week turns the daily commute into a team sport. Workplaces across the country register teams and log every commute made by foot, bike, transit, carpool, or working from home. Calgary is one of the long-running participating cities, with a local coordinator and a wrap-up celebration for participants. The point is simple: cut emissions and show people that getting around without driving alone is actually doable.
The challenge began in Calgary in 1991 as part of National Environment Week, started as a way to get commuters trying alternatives to driving alone. From there it grew into a national week-long workplace competition that now runs in cities across Canada.
