The Calgary Underground Film Festival is Western Canada’s biggest genre film festival, screening about 45 features and 35 shorts over 11 days each April at the Globe Cinema.
About
The program covers horror, sci-fi, fantasy, thrillers, comedies, documentaries and oddities that defy convention. Alongside the screenings there are filmmaker Q&As, the Saturday morning all-you-can-eat-cereal cartoon party, the CUFFcade indie game arcade, a 48-hour filmmaking challenge, and the annual 12-hour Halloween horror marathon.
It was founded by Brenda Lieberman and first held in 2004, opening in a bar called The Venue and moving mid-festival to Emmedia after a liquor-license issue. It has grown into an 11-day internationally recognized genre festival.
The same organization also runs CUFF.Docs, a documentary festival each November, plus year-round Off the CUFF screenings.
