Beyond the main concerts, the festival is known for its collaborative daytime sessions where artists jam together, plus a family zone, artisan market, and food vendors. It has a relaxed, bring-a-tarp-and-picnic vibe and is run largely by volunteers.

The festival began in 1980 as a modest two-day affair on three stages. It has grown into a four-day event with 65 plus artists on eight stages, and the organization also runs year-round programming at Festival Hall.
