Mission began as Notre Dame de la Paix, a Catholic mission founded at its permanent location by Father Constantine Scollen in 1875. Father Albert Lacombe later secured land for a French-speaking Catholic district, and the area was incorporated as the Village of Rouleauville on November 2, 1899, named after Charles Rouleau.

Calgary annexed Rouleauville in 1907, replacing its French street names with the numbering system. St. Mary's School, founded in 1885, is still the oldest operating school in Calgary, and St. Mary's Church, founded in 1889, became a cathedral in 1912. The neighbourhood has weathered major floods, including in 1929 and June 2013.
