History Of Bridgeland/Riverside
Bridgeland/Riverside has one of the most distinctive histories in Calgary. Originally settled in the late 1800s, it became known as "Germantown" due to the large number of Central and Eastern European immigrants who built homes here, many working in the nearby CPR rail yards. By the early 1900s many Italians and Ukrainians had moved to the area and Bridgeland became known as "Little Italy."
The neighbourhood was officially named "Bridgeland" in 1908, a reference to the Bow River bridges connecting it to downtown. Riverside was a separate village, incorporated in 1903, before being annexed by Calgary in 1910. Despite urban renewal efforts in the 1970s, many of Bridgeland's original character homes and tree-lined streets have been preserved. The demolition of the Calgary General Hospital in 1998 spurred significant redevelopment, and today Bridgeland/Riverside is one of Calgary's most desirable inner-city neighbourhoods.
