History Of Banff Trail

1952 Banff Trail is established during Calgary's post-war baby boom, originally called West Capitol Hill.
1960 McMahon Stadium opens just west of the community; the Calgary Stampeders have played there ever since.
1971 CF Market Mall opens nearby, becoming the northwest's major shopping centre.
1970s West Capitol Hill is renamed Banff Trail, after the former name of Crowchild Trail, the route that led out of Calgary toward Banff.
1987 The Banff Trail CTrain station opens on the Red Line.

Banff Trail was established in 1952 during Calgary's mid-century baby boom, when the city saw a population explosion and rapid suburban growth. It was originally called West Capitol Hill.

The community was renamed Banff Trail around the 1970s and 1980s, in part because Crowchild Trail was formerly known as Banff Trail, the route that led out of Calgary toward Banff. The new name gave the area a more distinct character from Capitol Hill to the east.
