History Of Altadore
Altadore was established in 1945 in southwest Calgary between 14 Street SW and Crowchild Trail. The name's origin is unclear. It may have been named after a mansion in County Wicklow, Ireland, or it may be a portmanteau combining "Alta" (for Alberta, or "alta" meaning high, as the neighbourhood sits on a hill) with "dore" (from the French "d'or", meaning of gold).
The Marda Loop Business Revitalization Zone, founded in 1984, runs through the community along 33 and 34 Avenues SW and has grown into one of Calgary's most popular outdoor shopping districts. In recent decades Altadore has seen significant gentrification, with many high-end infill and semi-detached homes built for young professionals and families drawn by the area's proximity to River Park and Marda Loop.
